Calculating Volume

Hey all,

   The forum change has me for a loop, I asked a question in an old thread but it isn't showing up as a recent, so I'm doing a new post.

   How do we get volumetric measurements?  From this thread:

   it sounds like we need to export a DEM file (don't know what that is) and shove it into another program for calculations.  What program would that be?  Anything free?
