Viewing reconstruction of building interior

That's quite true - I also find navigating within interiors a pain in the "somewhere delicate". It is especially difficult since there is no good way in RC to navigate up and down properly. I think I made a feature request for that ages ago, which has probably been forgotten along with many more (sorry for the negativity).

Using double clicking to define the new rotation center doesn't help at all because this can only be at a wall which causes the camera to move out of the room quite easily.

It would be great if there was a camera in the center of the reconstruction area or something, that can be turned freely...

Something that would help would be a section plane, where display of that part of the model to left, to right, or both, or neither, could be turned off. Then you could happily navigate and view one half of the hollow model ('standing' well back, if desired).

Excellent quick tools to drag the plane to and fro and swivel it in all axes, with dynamic view update, would be essential. Not so far off from present bounding-box capabilites - but not having to do a Reconstruction to view the result.
