Manual Alignment Workflow ?
Hi Guys,
I am evaluating Photogrammetry softwares for a gigs, and my choice balance beetween RC and PS.
My biggest concern is manual alignment.
I will have to shoot around 50 manufacturing machine and recreate them, the problem is that :
- i will not be able to shot nice 360 turnaround of each machine.
- machines will have metallic surface
- indoor lighting conditions might not be perfect either.
- i will not be able to shoot more than 30/50 photos for each one
So to sum up, the probability of success in a photogrammetry software without manual help is 0.00. :)
So i think that my only chance is
- to place magnet tracking point on the machine
- shoot 15/20 images with the best possible parallax
- and then be able to help the software by setting 10-20 tracking points manually to help him to calculate correct position.
My goal is to then get a correct camera alignment, and when this is done feed other photos for getting better texture detail.
Is this kind of workflow is possible in RC ? or is it more something for a tracking software like PFtrack ?
Thanks for your lights !
Cheers

Hi!
Sorry, you have a chance reconstruct something even from 3-5 images. But sorry, Photogrammetry especially with high precision is required enough images, correct overlap and good visible textures.Reflecting surfaces especially metallic is a biggest problem for any Photogrammetry software. But with polarizing filters and good lights, you can have better results.
But if you limited in image count... Only a way to manual Image based modelling. And this is not RealityCapture.

Thanks for your very informative answer Vlad !
I totally agree with you , the more i see it the more i find that it's not a photogrammetry task, considering the very bad shooting conditions. This is more a task for a manual tracking package where i will be able to isolate tracking point.
But i will try to test RealityCapture also in parallel because i definitly want to learn the tool. One feature that make you shine above competition is the ability to load LIDAR point cloud. I know PFtrack can also load LIDAR data, i don't know if PFtrack can export the point cloud from a solve to LIDAR format ? That would be great to be able to import those solve in RealityCapture, and be able to use PFtrack in parallel. I'm quite sure realityCapture could be the perfect tool for digital set reconstruction.

Hi emmanuel,
concerning your initial question:
Yes, RC can make use of targets as in that you can create manual Control Points to help with alignment. The big BUT is that those Control Points do not work like a manual alignment, that means RC still needs to find enough Tie Points by itself to be able to create a successful alignment.
Yes, you can use different images for modeling/texturing and alignment. Although I would use all of them for the alignment and only switch the ones with the markers off for modeling (if they add geometry) and texturing.
